Has it occurred to you that the 2008 recession and its aftermath is being seized upon by conservatives as an excuse to enact the kind of ideological social spending cuts they’ve always wanted to do? I mean, regardless of whether their proposals help the economy or not? Me, too. In fact, I think I’ve seen this movie before.

I remember when 9/11 was used as an opportunity to sell the American people an ideological foreign policy agenda that they would otherwise never have gone for. Again, completely regardless of whether those policies would address the threat of terrorism or not.

  1. Exactly. Conservatives both used 9/11 and the financial meltdown to pound out the idea that black is white, and we have paid, are paying, and will pay dearly for it. American idiocy continues. Four years after the republican party systematically shredded America, and after the fall of the tremendously unpopular Bush Administration (Gee, he’s not mentioned too much, is he?) The GOP wants your permission to continue shredding. How stupid do you have to be to give them the keys?

  3. They should raise some taxes AND cut defense. Deeply. I see no reason to cut social spending. it’s already pitiful compared to other civilized nations. (Overlooking the fact that our health care is so embarrassingly expensive.)
