  2. I actually have a theory on this issue. But first: I do agree that abstinence preaching doesn’t work.

My theory is that there is another big contributing factor to the drop in teen preg rates: Internet porn. Contra to what religious fundamentalists and crazed feminists would have us believe, porn does not turn men into a bunch of drooling, rape-thirsty animals.

My theory is that the ease an prevalence of Internet porn takes away much of the mystery and fantasy of sex. Whereas in my teenage years (the 1980′s), when viewing women naked and engaging in sex acts was very difficult to come by, it’s totally the opposite now.

The effect was that back in the old days every moment alone with a girl on a date was a never-ended chess match where the goal was to get clothes off and get into bed. It was like a heroin addict chasing the dragon.

Not that guys these days don’t still wish to get it on with their girl. But now if they don’t get lucky on a date they have a pretty easy and reliable outlet through which to release their fantasies. “My prom date won’t put out? Okay, I’ll go home and download 50 movies starring women who look just like her performing all assortment of sex acts. Then jack off and go to sleep.”

The study referenced in the article you linked actually confirms that sexual activity among 15-16 year olds has declined. Guys now (I believe) simply expend less effort than they did in the past in trying to get girls’ pants off – and the Internet porn (not abstinence education) is the reason.
