You may remember that there are several technologies that all the cool nerds enjoy but which I do not: Firefox, Linux, Twitter, Google Reader…  Here’s a new one: tinyurl.

    The reason?

  2. scott Says:

It obscures the destination, for one thing.

If I may suggest, you can actually turn on a feature with TinyUrl, such that when you click on the link, it will take you to a preview page where it will tell you where its going before you go there.

TinyUrl obviously can be overused, but in some circumstances is quite useful. Obviously, microblogging services like Twitter depend on it for sharing links with limited characters.

However its also very useful for sending links in emails, where often times email programs will insert line feeds in the middle of links making them hard for people to follow.

Oh, I know, I know. It definitely has a use. It’s just that I’ve never used it and somehow I’ve managed. Meanwhile I see this tinyurl urls and think “I can’t get any info about where it’s going unless I click…”

I was thinking of you the other day. I was showing GR to a colleague who was collecting their RSS feeds in a browser. After I showed them how I use Google Reader, they said, “wow, how did I not know about this?”. He is now a GR user.

What about Google Maps’ street view? Are you using it? They’ve done an incredible job of covering huge swaths of the world. I love how you can walk yourself down streets and look 360 degrees whenever and wherever.
